The one where the orphanage "goes green"

There’s a fine line between “going green” and being a redneck. Here in Mozambique, we’re doing our absolute best to obliterate that line. Let me show you what I mean. First up is the idea of recycling. What better way to recycle than just never get rid of anything. With that in mind, I present to you the infamous wheel BARrow-B-Q. Mmmmm, look at that chicken cook!

Below is Helder getting the second BARrow-B-Q ready for some more tasty chicken.

Canito (center) and Claudia (right) talk about how great it is that we’ve reduced our carbon footprint while Dorcas (left) takes a break from grilling.

Along with recycling, we reuse a lot of things here at the orphanage. Here is one of the kids favorite “seat”.

We use this for lots of things. Mostly sitting and eating in the cafeteria.

We also resuse our laborers. Here Dorcas is washing the rest of my laundry.

Here she is helping Gabriel with his homework.

Composting is another thing that is slowly starting to catch on here in Nampula. Thanks to a solid grassroots campaign, people all over the city are starting to see the merits of having a compost pile. Here, the kids are raking up leaves and loading them into the truck to take out to our compost bin.

Many hands make light work. It also tends to make it really funny and awkward for the rest of us watching.

Here is Victor orchestrating the entire event while Yohani looks on disapprovingly.

Quick side note: Everybody thinks its funny watching Victor carry Yohani around for three reasons. The first is that around here only women pack around their children. The second is that when women pack around their kids, they carry them on their back, not in the baby bjorn that Victor is wearing. The third is that Victor's baby bjorn looks just plain goofy.

Once the leaves are all loaded I drive the truck down the road aways and we dump them. Here is our compost bin. I think it might also be a fault line that stretches for miles without end, but who's to know for sure.
